  • Each of us has multiple identities, influenced by our ascribed characteristics (e.g., our race/ethnicity, cultural background, skin color, sexual orientation, ability, and gender); our achieved characteristics (e.g., our education, job, social position, and for some gender shifts).
  • How we view our identities and how we see ourselves relative to others is significant to understand as we go about designing programs/research/careers that incorporates health equity and the democratic production of knowledge with the communities we will serve in the future.
  • Write a brief reflection in 1 to 2 paragraphs on what ascribed and achieved characteristics you are conscious of and how they relate to the career you are interested as a surgeon
