Research paper topic Syrian Presbyterian Culture and Notions of Familial Piety

You will do in depth researchYour presentation will focus on some (not all) of the following regarding the cultural group:body language/gesture aspects; notions of etiquette; gender, age, religion influences; notionsof “work”; holidays, clothing, religious traditions; sporting activities; educational systems; socialcustoms; family traditions; and more. Ultimately, communication aspects need to be addressedin some way. I DO NOT want topics that address cultural stereotypes or “portrayals” of acertain cultural group. Before beginning you research, you will provide a detailed statement –or a “specific purpose statement”- of what you plan on focusing on for your speech, which willinclude a specific focus and 3 specific points or aspects.

The presentation will require the use of at least 4 acceptable, college level sources. Researchshould familiarize you with the specific Cultural Group you are focusing on and give you indepth knowledge of the cultural/communication focus for your speech. Research should beused in the body of the speech to support and illustrate your points, and to establish yourcredibility. You will be required to turn in a complete and correct bibliography (or “sourcescited” page) for the speech. Sources must be cited in speech.Visual Aids are not required, but PowerPoint visual aids are encouraged.Speech will be 6-8 minutes long, with a 30 second grace period after 8 minutesDelivery must be extemporaneous; only note cards (no more than 6 with no more than 10words on a card) or correctly structured key word outlines can be used in the speech.

Key word outline and bibliography are required to be turned in. Speech must be properly structured, with an introduction that fulfills all functions, a body madeup of 2 or 3 main points and supported by supporting materials, and a conclusion that signalsthe end of the speech.Speaker must appear credible regarding the topic. 4 sources used and citedSpeech must be presented on day scheduled. instruction part 2  ( How the speech should Be written)

Part 1: The Introduction – The introduction of this speech will have three parts which include:

  1. Attention Grabber – The purpose of the introduction is to gain or grab the attention of your audience. This can be accomplished by telling a touching or funny story, using a quotation, using an interesting fact, or anything else that is a creative and unique way to begin the speech about you.  DO NOT begin the speech by saying “This is my topic” or “My topic is . . .”
  2. Make your topic clear with a “Thesis Statement” – also called a “topic sentence”.  “Today, i will be speaking to you about . . . “
  3. Central idea/preview statement – Preview the three main body points of your speech. Tell the audience what to expect in the body of the speech. This sentence can be as simple as, “Today, I will share with you three items that have impacted my life which include my grandmother, the game of basketball, and my goal to become a nurse.”

Part 2: The Body – The longest, most important part of any speech is the BODY. The body of a speech consists of two to three main points or ideas. This speech should have three body points. These three points are the aspects about yourself or your life that you choose to focus on during your speech. Choose main points that you will enjoy talking about and that will interest the audience. For example, using the central idea/preview statement above, the three main parts of this speech are: 1) your grandmother and her role in your life; 2) your love for basketball; 3) your goal to become a nurse.Main points need to be supported. You will need to describe, illustrate, define and share interesting, unique details about each of the three main points. Find a creative way to explain each of your main points and why they are significant in defining who you are.  Supporting Materials are those things you use to add detail and support your points.  For a speech about yourself, supporing materials include brief Examples and longer Extended Examples (also called Narratives).  They are used to illutrate the points you are making.Transitions – Your speech should always include transitions. Transition words are needed to help the speech flow and help listeners follow where you are in a speech. They indicate when you’ve finished one thought and are moving to another. Words like, “first,” “second,” “finally,” “next,” are simple waysto transition from one main point to another. You also need a transition to your conclusion such as, “in conclusion,” “in summary,” or “in closing.” Part 3: The Conclusion – The conclusion of a speech has two parts: the summary and the clincher.

  1. Summary – The purpose of the summary is to restate your central idea and remind the audience of what you have talked about in your speech. It should start with a transition to signal the end of your speech. (In conclusion…In summary, etc.)
  2. Clincher – This is where you end the speech on a strong note. Develop a creative ending that makes your audience remember you and your speech.
