You will read one of the following books:  (rubric attached)

·       
Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, (slavery)

·       
The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, (socialism and government regulation)

·       
The Feminine Mystique, by Betty Friedan, (modern feminist movement   

·       
Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson. (environmental movement)

·       
The Other America. by Michael Harrington (Johnson’s Great Society)

 

You will write an 1500 – 1800 word essay.  Your thesis statement for this essay will be:  “The book (put in title, author) was significant in American History because it changed American society by . . .” You will research what impact the book had on American society. Make sure you cite any sources that you use and provide a works cited page at the end of your essay.  Use MLA format for your paper, and include in-text citations. Make sure you use specific examples to support your thesis from the book and provide the citation.  Do not over quote.  Try not to quote at all.  Paraphrase what you want to say from the book. You will describe the historical content of the book, how it fit into the history of its time and the impact that it had on America.  This EC will go to your choice of Class Assignments and Modules or either research paper grade, depending where you need it the most. — your choice to be made at the time of submission.  Write it on the top of your paper.

 

 You may read additional books and write essays about them for up to 100 extra credits for each additional book due at the midterm.

 

For fun read The Boy Who Inherited the Wind, and/or I am Malala.  Write a 1500-1800 word essay on the importance of the book and what you learned from it.  Again use specific examples from the book but don’t quote it.  Cite to your pages when you discuss the book.  You will receive up to 50 EC for each book.  You will be glad you did.  This EC will go towards your Research Paper grade or Class Assignments and Modules grade (you choose).
